Organic Fertilizers vs. Synthetic Fertilizers

The question of the ages. Organic fertilizers often have much more to offer than just nutrients. Along with macronutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium) many organic fertilizers like Age Old Kelp that provides 70 trace minerals, vitamins, amino acids, growth promoting hormones, and beneficial microbes. Synthetic fertilizers are a good source of macronutrients but many don’t have the micronutrients to make the plant thrive. As an example, if you were trying to incorporate more vitamin c in your diet you could drink more orange juice or take a vitamin supplement pill. Either way you get more vitamin c but, you get more enjoyment from the orange juice. Our website has a large selection of organic fertilizers that is specialized to help your plants grow, bloom, or just sustain a healthy plant life.

What is N-P-K?

The N-P-K is listed on every bag or bottle of fertilizer, but most people don’t know what this means. First of all the three numbers on the bag signifies the amount of macronutrients in the fertilizer. The number that appears first in the sequence is Nitrogen content. This nutrient is helpful for providing structure, growth and greens the leaves. The second number is Phosphorus content. Phosphorus helps root development. This is crucial for all growth in the plant because the root system is the delivery method for all nutrients and water. The last number is the Potassium content. This is good for many components of the plant both above and below ground. A great little phrase to remember the benefits is: Above Ground – Below Ground – All Around.

Some lawn fertilizers have cut phosphorus completely out of their formula. There are a few reasons for this. The reason that they want you to know is that it can leech in to your drinking water and is not safe. This is rarely true in residential applications. The element doesn’t move that far in the soil and is applied at such a low rate it is very improbable. In agricultural use, it is applied at a higher rate and many times in irrigation ditches that will runoff into a well. The reason that they have reduced the phosphorus levels to or near zero is it cost to much. Over the past year and a half phosphorus has quintupled in price. (that’s 5 times the original price) To make the lawn fertilizer more affordable they cut the amount of phosphorus used. Don’t fall for the tricks they like to use, phosphorus is still a macronutrient that every plant needs.

One product that I use on my yard is Age Old Grow in the Hose End sprayer. It is easy to apply and has the necessary amount of macro and micro nutrient in an organic fertilizer. All of our products are developed to be the best for the plant.
